The US Certified Management Accountant (CMA) is a globally recognized finance credential awarded by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). It covers financial planning, performance analysis, cost management, and strategic decision support: the skills that FP&A, finance controller, and management accounting roles at GCCs, MNCs, and Big 4 advisory teams demand. For Indian B.Com, M.Com, and MBA Finance graduates, the CMA is one of the most accessible and career-relevant globally recognized credentials available. This guide covers every step of the process from eligibility to certification, the exam format, testing windows, cost, and what career paths open once you are certified.
The CMA designation is awarded by ICMA (the Institute of Certified Management Accountants), the certification affiliate of IMA. It is distinct from the Indian CMA issued by ICMAI (the Institute of Cost Accountants of India). When employers in India refer to the "US CMA" or "CMA USA," they mean the IMA credential.
In India, the US CMA is recognized at Big 4 firms, GCCs of US and European MNCs, and listed Indian companies with international reporting requirements. It is particularly valued in FP&A, finance business partner, management accounting, and finance controller roles where financial planning depth and analytical rigor are central to the work. The IMA's 2023 Global Salary Survey found that CMAs in the Middle East, Africa, and India region earn 39% more than non-certified peers.
The IMA's eligibility criteria for CMA certification are straightforward. Three requirements must be met, though they do not all need to be completed before you sit the exam.
Active IMA membership is required before you can register for the CMA program. There is no minimum age requirement. Professional membership costs $295 per year, with a one-time $15 processing fee at first enrollment. Student membership is available at $49 per year for candidates currently enrolled in an accredited degree program taking at least six credit hours per term.
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required. Indian degrees from recognized universities qualify. B.Com, M.Com, BBA, MBA, and engineering degrees from NAAC-accredited or UGC-recognized institutions all meet this requirement. There is no minimum percentage or grade point requirement.
Candidates who have not yet completed their degree may still sit the exam if they are in the final year of their program. The degree must be completed before the work experience documentation is submitted for final certification. The IMA allows candidates who qualify through a related professional certification (such as the CA, CPA, or ACCA) in lieu of a bachelor's degree. Verify current accepted certifications with the IMA directly if this route applies to you.
Two continuous years of professional experience in management accounting or financial management are required for certification. This requirement can be fulfilled before, during, or within seven years of passing the exam. You do not need any work experience to register or sit the exam. Qualifying functions include FP&A, budgeting, cost accounting, financial analysis, management reporting, internal controls, and treasury roles. The experience must be in a finance or accounting function. It does not need to be at a US company.
| Eligibility Factor | Requirement for Indian Candidates |
|---|---|
| IMA membership | Active membership required before program entry. Professional ($295/year) or Student ($49/year). |
| Education | Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. B.Com, M.Com, BBA, and MBA all qualify. |
| Work experience | 2 continuous years in management accounting or financial management. Must be completed within 7 years of passing the exam. |
| Minimum age | None specified. |
| Citizenship | Not required. Open to any nationality, including Indian citizens. |
Step 1: Join IMA and Pay the CMA Entrance Fee
Visit imanet.org and create an IMA account. Purchase your IMA membership and pay the one-time CMA entrance fee in the same transaction. The entrance fee is $300 for professional members and $225 for student members. This fee is non-refundable and starts your three-year program window. Do not pay the entrance fee until you are genuinely ready to begin preparation, as the three-year clock starts from this payment date.
Step 2: Register for Your Exam Parts
After paying the entrance fee, register for one or both exam parts through your IMA account portal. You can register for Part 1 and Part 2 in any order, or register for both at the same time. The exam registration fee is $545 per part for professional members and $407 per part for student members. Registration gives you access to a specific testing window. If you cannot sit the exam in your assigned window, you must either transfer your registration (by emailing ima@imanet.org at least five days before your scheduled appointment) or forfeit the fee and re-register at full cost. A no-show at Prometric requires repayment of the full exam fee.
Step 3: Schedule Your Exam at a Prometric Center in India
The CMA exam is administered exclusively at Prometric testing centers. Remote testing is not available for the CMA. Indian candidates must attend in person at a Prometric center. Cities with Prometric centers offering the CMA exam in India include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Pune, among others. Schedule your appointment at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date and location. All exam appointments must be scheduled at least 72 hours before the exam date. Prometric centers in major Indian cities fill quickly during peak windows, particularly January-February.
Step 4: Prepare and Pass Both Exam Parts
Each CMA exam part consists of 100 multiple-choice questions and either two essay questions or case-based questions (CBQs), depending on the window. You have four hours to complete each part. The MCQ section runs for three hours, followed by a 30-minute essay or CBQ section. You must score at least 50% on the MCQ section before your essay or CBQ responses are graded. Passing scores are scaled to a range of 0 to 500. The minimum passing score is 360. The IMA recommends 150 to 170 hours of study per part. Most candidates complete both parts within 6 to 12 months.
Step 5: Submit Your Education and Work Experience Documentation
After passing both exam parts, submit your education transcript and work experience verification through your IMA account. Your supervisor or manager at the qualifying employer must complete a verification form. The IMA reviews the submission and awards your CMA designation once all requirements are confirmed. This step can be completed before, during, or within seven years of passing the exam.
Step 6: Receive Your CMA Designation and Maintain It
Once certification is granted, you maintain it by renewing your IMA membership annually and paying the $30 CMA annual maintenance fee. You must also complete 30 CPE hours per calendar year, including at least two hours of ethics. The IMA provides access to qualifying CPE content through its online learning library, much of which is included in membership.
The CMA exam is based on the ICMA content specification outlines, which are updated periodically to reflect current practice in management accounting and financial management.
| Part | Content Areas and Weight |
|---|---|
| Part 1: Financial Planning, Performance, and Analytics | External financial reporting decisions (15%), Planning, budgeting, and forecasting (20%), Performance management (20%), Cost management (15%), Internal controls (15%), Technology and analytics (15%) |
| Part 2: Strategic Financial Management | Financial statement analysis (20%), Corporate finance (20%), Decision analysis (25%), Risk management (10%), Investment decisions (10%), Professional ethics (15%) |
Part 1 is the more content-heavy part and typically the harder one for candidates without prior US accounting exposure. Part 2 is more analytical, covering corporate finance, decision analysis, and investment decisions, with a larger ethics component. The 15% ethics weighting in Part 2 is one of the larger ethics components in any professional finance credential and requires deliberate preparation.
The IMA offers three testing windows per year. Each window has a registration deadline and a testing period. Within a window, each part can be taken once. Indian candidates can use any of the three windows. The September-October window is the least crowded and often easiest for scheduling at preferred Prometric centers. The January-February window is popular because candidates who begin preparation in October can sit Part 1 in January and Part 2 in May, completing both parts within a single year.
| Window | Testing Dates | Last Day to Register |
|---|---|---|
| January–February | January 1 to February 28 | January 15 |
| May–June | May 1 to June 30 | May 15 |
| September–October | September 1 to October 31 | October 15 |
During the May-June window, candidates can choose between traditional essay questions and the newer case-based question (CBQ) format introduced by the IMA in 2026. CBQs present a business scenario followed by structured multiple-choice and short-answer questions rather than open-ended essay prompts. The January-February and September-October windows offer essay format. Check the IMA's announcement page for confirmation of which format is available in each window at the time you register.

The US CMA opens specific, high-demand roles in corporate finance and management accounting that are increasingly specified in job postings at GCCs, MNCs, and Big 4 advisory teams in India.
FP&A and financial planning roles: FP&A analyst, senior FP&A analyst, and finance business partner roles at GCCs of US and European MNCs are the most direct target for CMA holders. These roles involve budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and management reporting. The CMA curriculum maps directly to the daily work in these functions.
Finance controller and management accounting: Finance controller, assistant controller, and cost accounting roles at MNC subsidiaries and large Indian corporates. CMA holders with three to five years of post-certification experience are competitive candidates for these roles.
Big 4 advisory: Finance transformation, performance improvement, and FP&A advisory practice areas within Deloitte, EY, PwC, and KPMG India recruit CMA holders for client-facing roles where financial planning depth is required.
GCCs of US MNCs: Companies including Amazon, Microsoft, Google, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, and hundreds of mid-size US firms run finance teams in India. These GCCs actively hire CMA-credentialed professionals for senior analyst and manager roles in budgeting, reporting, and performance management.
Yes. A B.Com degree from any UGC-recognized Indian university meets the education requirement. There is no minimum percentage and no requirement for any specific specialization. A B.Com in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or any other subject qualifies.
B.Com students in their final year can register for student membership at $49 per year and sit both exam parts before graduation. The work experience requirement can be completed in the years following graduation and submitted within seven years of passing. This means a B.Com graduate who passes both parts at 22 has until 29 to complete and submit two years of qualifying experience.
The IMA requires two continuous years of professional experience in management accounting or financial management. The work does not need to be in the United States or at a US company. Indian employers count fully if the function qualifies.
Qualifying functions include:
Roles in purely clerical accounting, data entry, tax preparation without management accounting, or functions outside finance do not qualify. Your supervisor at the qualifying employer submits a verification form to the IMA confirming that your role meets the work experience criteria.
Once certified, maintaining the CMA requires three annual obligations:
IMA membership renewal: Active IMA membership must be maintained each year. Professional membership renews at $295 per year.
CMA Annual Maintenance Fee: A $30 annual fee paid to ICMA each calendar year.
CPE: 30 CPE hours per calendar year, including at least 2 ethics hours. CPE must cover topics related to management accounting or financial management. The IMA provides access to qualifying CPE content through its member learning library. Hardship waivers are available in documented cases of military service, serious illness, or severe financial hardship.
